    Process

How emergency lighting & controls works

    1. Agree scope

What's on site, how it's used and where it lives — that sets the test method and interval.

    2. Inspect & test

A trained, competent person inspects and tests every item with the right instrument.

    3. Tag & record

Results recorded: who tested, when, the outcome and the next due date.

    4. Fix & remind

Faults flagged and remedied, and the next test lined up before it falls due.

    FAQ

Emergency Lighting & Controls: your questions

Q01How often does emergency lighting need testing?

Guidance extracted from AS 2293.2 calls for a discharge test every six months, and a twelve-monthly visit that adds cleaning of light-emitting surfaces and checks that fittings work correctly with the normal lighting. Each inspection is recorded in the service logbook. The current edition of the standard is AS/NZS 2293.2:2019.

Q02How long must emergency lights stay on in a discharge test?

With the normal supply uninterrupted for at least 16 hours beforehand, lights and exit signs must stay lit for no less than 2 hours when batteries are new, and no less than 90 minutes in subsequent tests. Fittings that fail must be repaired or replaced.

Q03Can you keep our emergency lighting logbook?

Yes — compiling emergency lighting test logs is part of the service, along with globe, tube, battery pack and inverter / controller replacement.
