FAQ

Residential Electrician: your questions

Q01How many safety switches (RCDs) does my home need?

In Western Australia at least two RCDs must be fitted in homes, and more may be needed. Before a property is sold, RCDs must protect all circuits supplying power points and lights, and landlords must have RCDs installed in the switchboards of rental premises.

Q02How often should I test my safety switches?

Building and Energy recommends pressing the test button on each RCD every three months (or as the manufacturer says, if that's more often). If it doesn't trip to OFF straight away, or won't stay on after resetting, call a licensed electrical contractor.

Q03What paperwork should I get after electrical work?

For electrical installing work (other than maintenance and like-for-like replacements), your electrical contractor must give you a copy of the Electrical Safety Certificate within 28 days of completing the work. Only a licensed electrical contractor can issue one.
