    The rules in plain English

What each test is for — and who says so

Checked against WorkSafe WA's Code of Practice, Building and Energy guidance and AS 2293.2 maintenance guidance. Sources are linked on every card.

    Test & tag

    • Plug-in equipment exposed to moisture, heat, vibration, mechanical damage, corrosive chemicals or dust must be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person (WHS General Regulations r.150).
    • General rule for those higher-risk environments: at least every 12 months. Manufacturing and workshop equipment and commercial cleaning equipment, for example, every 6 months; hire equipment every 3 months and at the start of each hire.
    • Records must show who tested, the date, the outcome and the next test date — a tag can carry it.
    • Construction and demolition sites must comply with AS/NZS 3012 (r.163).

    RCDs (safety switches)

    • Where plug-in equipment is used in hostile conditions, it must be protected by an appropriate RCD — 30 mA maximum on socket outlets up to 20 A (r.164).
    • RCDs used at a workplace, including fixed RCDs, must be tested regularly by a competent person, with a record kept until the next test (r.165).
    • The business sets the frequency by risk assessment or on a competent person's advice. The standard 30 mA RCD operates within 300 milliseconds.
    • At home: WA requires at least two RCDs; press each test button every three months.

    RCDs (safety switches) service

    Emergency & exit lighting

    • Six-monthly: discharge test after at least 16 hours of uninterrupted charge.
    • Fittings must stay lit for at least 90 minutes (2 hours when batteries are new). Failures repaired or replaced.
    • Twelve-monthly: discharge test plus cleaning of light-emitting surfaces and checks against normal lighting.
    • Every inspection recorded in the service logbook kept on the premises.

    Switchboard thermal imaging

    • KRC recommends thermal imaging of all switchboards every 12 months — more often where environmental conditions are influential.
    • A detailed thermal imaging report specifying every issue can go straight to your insurer.
    • Prominent insurers are now making this maintenance a condition of policy renewal.
    • Scans are non-destructive and run under normal load, with no interruption to supply.

    FAQ

    Compliance questions, answered

Q01Is the planner's interval the law?

Not always. In WA the WHS (General) Regulations 2022 require plug-in equipment in higher-risk environments and workplace RCDs to be tested regularly by a competent person, but most specific intervals come from the WA Code of Practice and Australian Standards as guidance. The business sets final intervals by risk assessment — the planner shows where each number comes from so you can decide with confidence.

Q02What does a test record need to include?

Under r.150(3), the name of the person who did the testing, the date, the outcome and the date of the next test. It must be kept until the equipment is next tested, permanently removed from the workplace or disposed of. A tag can be the record.

Q03Who counts as a competent person?

Someone licensed or registered to do electrical work, or a person who has completed a test and tag course and competency-based assessment using a portable appliance tester. Every KRC Electrical employee has completed a test and tag course.

    Q04Does brand-new equipment need testing?

Brand-new equipment that has never been used doesn't need testing before first use, but it should still be visually inspected for transport or installation damage, and its date into service recorded so it doesn't miss its first test. Second-hand equipment should be tested before first use.
